  • Transmitting computer audio to stereo: not very good
Pros: simple setup, aesthetically pleasing, doesn't take up much space at all

Cons: poor audio quality, dropped signal when playing audio from internet

I bought this item looking to reduce the clutter from wires crawling across my apartment. I have a pretty decent 5.1 setup with a Yamaha receiver (not bluetooth capable) and Yamaha speakers. I bought a new Windows 7 computer, and what I wanted to do was use the computer's built-in bluetooth capabilities to transmit music playing on my computer to the receiver to play through my speakers. I settled on this Motorola model because of the price and the reviews I read compared to other items of similar price and function.

Getting this one to work is simple. While the instructions don't specify steps to connect a computer to the device, they do give instructions on how to connect your phone's audio (music) to your home audio system. Simply replace "phone" with "computer". (I'm guessing these instructions were written before bluetooth became an ordinary add-on for computers.) Once the devices are paired, set the options on your computer to play audio through the bluetooth device, and you're set. After the original pairing, operating was as simple as switching audio output settings from my computer's volume properties.

My first time using the device, I played music from Windows Media Player, iTunes, and my other media players, and the sound was poor. I tried different songs of varying bitrates, and they all sounded poor, almost mono. I compared the bluetooth transmission to my old school wired connection I replaced with this receiver, and my songs came back to life. I bought a different, higher quality cable to run from the Motorola receiver to my Yamaha, and it seemed to help the quality a bit, but it was still inferior to the cable. I'll give some of that to the loss of quality you get when you switch from a wired connection.

My other and more serious complaint was the inconsistent audio. During my test, I used media players and internet sources. For some reason, for all internet sources I tried (youtube, etc.), the audio would go in and out, and there were gaps in playback. I was never able to solve this problem. This aspect was unforgivable. My computer is about 10ft from the receiver, and it would drop its connection.

Overall: Before I purchased, I understood that audio quality may suffer when transmitted wirelessly (bluetooth especially), but if this is the quality I get for the price I paid, I'll stick to the wired connection until there's a higher quality wireless solution. I've seen more expensive models, but I'm now generally skeptical of bluetooth receivers. I understand Windows 7 has a feature called "play to" that may be a solution for me, but I need to purchase a "play to" compatible device. Until then, I'll stay wired, and this receiver goes into my stockpile of unused gadgets.
  • Makes exercising more fun!
This was a great purchase from Amazon. Because I didn't see it in any stores, I was a little worried about whether this would really do what I wanted. But in the end it was terrific! I have not used it as a bluetooth receiver, but as a transmitter. Caution, pairing is not instantaneous. It takes several seconds (about 20 or so?) to get paired. Then you can get on your elliptical and chug away with great sound, even from news programs!
  • Works well except for annoying pause in audio
I am not sure why this happens and sometimes it only does it once or twice in 30 mins, but there is a annoying pause in the audio stream. This is really annoying when watching a movie. Other than that, the range is decent and it works as advertised.
  • Awesome for TV, not in sync for TV
I bought the DC800 gateway 2 years ago and have paired it with many different devices. Headsets, receivers, dongles, phones. No complaints on the range or the quality of sound. I stream Pandora from my computer to my stereo all the time. There is a slight delay with the transmitted music, so there is an echo effect if the computer speakers are playing the music too. The computer is on the opposite side of my house so it really doesn't matter for me. Watching TV is out of the question, as the picture and the sound do not sync. I would say there is a .25 sec delay. So not real bad, just annoying.
  • Excellent Blue Tooth TV sound adapter
Bought this adapter to use with Oticon hearing aid blue tooth "streamer" to listen to TV or stereo sound through the hearing aids. Hearing aid people sold their brand of TV adapter for $175, but it had major problems with interference. The Motorola device costs a lot less and works like a charm. No interference. Very powerful transmitter works throughout the house at distances further than normal bluetooth. Easy to set up and use. A really good buy.
